HELP WANTED

I’d much rather offer my help than ask for it.

When I talk about my volunteer work with the Charlottesville Track Club during interviews, I always explain that I will never criticize something unless I’m willing to try to fix it or improve it. That’s how I started with the Marathon and Half Marathon Training Program. I saw the way people signed up (on paper!) and it didn’t seem to be ideal. I made suggestions to help modernize registration and disseminate information on a website and social media. On May 23 we have our orientation meeting for the program I’ve helped coordinate for over 13 years and I can’t wait to keep making it better with each edition.

Asking for help has been really hard for me. I don’t have a lot of memories about my time at the Child Guidance Center in Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital, when I suffered from Anorexia Nervosa, but the one that clearly stands out is when I couldn’t ask for a tissue. I don’t know why I was crying, but I remember the counselor offering me a tissue and then questioning why I couldn’t ask for one myself when I clearly needed it. That sticks with me almost 40 years later … that I could have tears and snot all over my face and still not ask for help.

I’m trying very hard to change this hesitancy of mine. It’s not that I think it’s weak to ask for help; I don’t. It’s just that sometimes I feel like I don’t want to bother people or I think maybe I don’t deserve help or kindness because there are so many people with greater needs than mine. Or, I fear rejection when someone doesn’t respond in the way I’d hope for.

I’m learning that it’s worth the risk to put yourself out there and ask for something that someone might enthusiastically give you. That’s why I recently sent out an email with the subject line, “I need your help.” I didn’t want to hide the fact that my twin sister and I had been struggling with some big changes over the past year and we wanted our 50th birthday to be special and memorable. A photo from a friend could be the one bright spot in an otherwise challenging day. No one can read my mind so I need to tell people how meaningful it would be get that picture. And guess what? It’s working! We’ve already received adorable and beautiful photos of our “Flat Twins” and I can’t wait to see more.

HELP WANTED

The sign in the store window for a job opening might be “Help Wanted”, but I’m finding the job hunt to be a lot like dating. It’s a confusing mixture of “Swipe right” and “Swipe left” on both sides. Is this the dream job? Is she the ideal candidate?

We all want the offer/acceptance instead of the rejection/denial. Is it worse to get a interview only to be rejected or to get passed on right away? I can’t quite figure it all out just yet. All I know is that it’s very challenging and exciting at the same time.

I never dated much and I had the same job longer than my marriage, so how do I maneuver myself in this strange world of hiring? Sometimes I think I just need to have the right conversation with the right person and they will know that I want this and that I can do it. (OMG I’m quoting Shiv from HBO’s Succession. I hope my resume doesn’t get torn apart like her memo did!)

I’m very lucky to be getting interviews for positions that I really want or am genuinely interested in, but I find myself thinking afterwards, “Oh **** I was too honest!” I wonder: Is my unique and transparent personality getting in the way of receiving an offer or do I just not have the experience needed? As a former supervisor once told one of my colleagues, “You’ve got to let Leah be Leah.” I know deep down that if I can’t be valued or appreciated for being my authentic self, then it’s probably not the right position for me. That being said, perhaps I should try to avoid any self-deprecating humor next time I’m on Zoom.

I’m going to do a deep dive analysis of my job hunt so far and work on improving my resume and my elevator pitch to market myself to potential employers. I was thinking about writing my bio for a company website where I want to work as if I were hired to see what I come up with. I also thought on my two-hour walk this morning that maybe I need to work on my tagline, but all I could come up with were funny ones for an edition of the “Real Running Housewives of Charlottesville.” Seriously Bravo come here to cast your next franchise!

“I’ve got a one track mind, but don’t always stay in my lane.”

“No need to analyze my face, just check my resting heart rate.”

“It’s time for me to roll, but only because my piriformis really hurts.”

“I want to break the glass ceiling like I’ve shattered my sesamoids … into many little pieces.”

“Every mile is a gift and I love presents! (especially in Pokemon Go)”

So please send me and my twin lots of birthday “presents” on Tuesday, May 18th … especially Flat Twin photos and Pokemon Go gifts (they’re FREE!).

Charlottesville Track Club on Charlottesville Inside-Out

I was recently interviewed for a local PBS program, Charlottesville Inside-Out, to discuss running and my volunteer involvement with the Charlottesville Track Club. You can watch the amazing segment online here: http://video.ideastations.org/video/2365656451/

I was thrilled to be approached by Terri to talk about my volunteer involvement with the Charlottesville Track Club and my passion for running.

From the first contact she had with me to watching the piece air for the first time on TV, the entire experience was one of the highlights of my time in Charlottesville.

Being interviewed by Terri was like talking with an old friend. She helped make me feel comfortable and valued and it showed in the piece.

Terri was thorough and accommodating in finding the resources she needed, including photos and interviews, for a piece which I feel is an amazing and touching tribute to the running community in Charlottesville.

I've watched the segment three times already and it brings a huge smile and sense of pride to me every time!

c-ville-athon - Design Your Own 26.2 Mile Racing Experience

The c-ville-athon is the brilliant idea of my coach, volunteer race director, and running store owner Mark Lorenzoni. Created as a way to encourage runners to try a variety of local not-for-profit races as well as to track one’s progress over the year, the c-ville-athon allows participants to design their own racing experience by running at least 26.2 miles in charity events in a calendar year.

I worked behind the scenes to create a logo, flyers, website, and social media presence for this initiative and it was a huge success during its first year.

Of the 243 people who signed up for the challenge in the inaugural event, 83 runners submitted their checklists, running a total of more than 2,500 miles for worthy causes!

Currently we have 216 likes on Facebook and 46 followers on Twitter. We hope to increase our visibility and engagement over the next year.

Since I’ve been a race addict since 2007, it came as no surprise to me that I was at the top of the leader board for total miles raced with 98.4. Andrew Hersey came in 2nd with 51.1 miles and Kristin Morgan was 3rd with 46.9 miles.

Although I didn't PR in any distances during my c-ville-athon, I was the most proud of my Charlottesville Ten Miler time of 1:16:42 which is my 3rd fastest time in that distance (and the two faster times were on the flat Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run course).

I had a few really bad races this year especially in the 5K (for me, anything 24 or above is disappointing unless it's the week after a marathon :) which was the Chocolate Chase after the Chicago Marathon). Luckily, I was able to finish off the year with two 5Ks averaging 7:40 pace on my Garmin and finish times of 23:26 and 23:05.

I created an evaluation form to get feedback and suggestions from the 2015 finishers. Here is a sampling of some of their kind words:

"Fun idea :-) Enjoy participating in local events and supporting local organizations; motivation to participate in an extra event or three during the year!"

"This was a great way to stay involved, get healthy, and contribute to some very good causes. Please do this again in 2016!"

"Thank you for hosting such a fun competition! I look forward to participating next year.”

"It looked like a fun thing to do, since I was planning to run several races already. I love tracking my progress."

"Thank you for putting this together! It's been really fun!"

"I thought it would be fun since I was running enough races. I told all if my running friends and we did discuss our progress especially toward the fall."

"This was such a good idea! Thank you!"

"Thank you for sponsoring such an innovative way to encourage race participation in the Charlottesville community. It certainly kept me motivated!"

"That was fun! Thanks for organizing it!"

"It was so pleasant an experience to run all those races and learn of this recognition."

"I thought it was a neat way to turn lots of little events into a bigger event; it was also great for tracking progress (or, sometimes, the lack thereof). I considered it fortuitous timing, since I had only been in town for some months, and found out about it while looking for races to participate in last spring. Being in on the inaugural edition seemed pretty neat, and putting the focus on non-profit races is quite nice."

Boston Marathon Ballad by Bella Morte

One more time
Sally forth to the city
Tally ho!
Don't fall behind Malinda Ann
Keep up if you can

Take a right on Hereford, my dear
Take a left on Boylston, ya hear?
Fast as a deer, swift as an eagle
To claim your throne atop Heartbreak Hill

Trial by fire, try again
You shall be victorious
When your feet hit the street
Your speed will be glorious

Oh, and the prophets did speak
Of a glorious feat
Setting the streets aflame
Oh, the poets did write
Of a legendary night
When Boston remembers your name!

Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon - Saturday October 4

FACEBOOK   TWITTER

SEPTEMBER 6 RACE RESULTS & 2-MILE SPLITS

The Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon is officially certified by the USATF (VA14004TR) and therefore can be used as a Boston Qualifier. The course is 6.5 "loops" of the 4-mile trail beginning at Riverview Park and following along the river on the Rivanna Greenbelt Trail.

The inaugural race was September 6. The next race is Saturday, October 4, 6:30 a.m.
Currently, this is a MARATHON ONLY, with a limited number of registrants (minimum 10, maximum 20) and a time-limit (see below). The marathon is FREE to MHMTP participants. There will be a nominal fee of $30 for this no-frills race for other runners.

LOGISTICS

*Please note: Because of the early start time and for safety reasons you will need a headlamp or flashlight for the first 2-3 miles, expecially if it's overcast.

There will be two water/gatorade stops along the course that runners will have access to every two miles. They will be located near the start/finish area and the 2 mile turn-around point.
Please be prepared by bringing your own gu/gels. We will only have clif bars at the finish (the 2-mile water stop will NOT have any food).

If you'd like to bring your own labeled bottles of sports drinks or nutritional supplements, you can leave them on the water tables to grab during the race.

There are two porta-potties available near the start/finish of the course.

The course is NOT closed to the public during the race, but luckily since it's a trail, we don't have to worry about cars! MHMTP participants will also be running on the course between approximately 6:45 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

This is a low-key, no-frills, bare-bones race, therefore no shirts or medals will be provided as part of registration. We will email you a certificate of completion to print after the race.
However you may purchase your own shirt with the race logo on spreadshirt.com.

Rivanna Greenbelt logo on LIGHT items
Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon logo on DARK items

REGISTER ONLINE

Due to the limited size of each race, runners will only be able to register for the Rivanna Marathon once a year. Exceptions may be made if field limit is not reached.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are essential to the success of this race! We need volunteers to help document splits at each of the three turnarounds. We also would like volunteers to help with setting up and managing the water stops. All volunteers receive a FREE CTC technical shirt (long or short sleeved). If you can volunteer for the entire race you get TWO shirts!
