2016 ODDyssey Half Marathon Costume Contest and Race Recaps

ODDyssey Half Marathon Costume Contest

3 of 140 (45-49)
54 of 1,419 (Female)
207 of 2,448 (Overall)

I'm the first to admit that I'm not the best at writing race recaps. As Joan Benoit Samuelson says, "every race tells a story" and I enjoy reading and sharing other runners' stories. I wish it was easy for me to tell my story but I'll try to share what I can. After suffering from severe and sudden shin splint type pain during my run on Thursday, I was seriously worried that I wouldn't be able to run at all on Sunday. Running is my stress relief and I just began marathon training so the thought of not being able to run for weeks was overwhelming. Fortunately, I decided to take it one day at a time and forced myself to rest (no more #RWRunStreak for me) and iced, iced, baby! ;-) Two days without running felt like 2 months since my shin still hurt while I walked and I feared the worst. When I woke up on Sunday morning, I taped my leg, put on my compression socks and hoped for the best. I was pleasantly surprised that I had no shin pain at all during the race. I was truly grateful for every step and enjoyed every mile (even that final hill!). Due to the high temperature, humidity and dew point, I knew that I had to race carefully. I tried my best to maintain marathon pace throughout the race and I was able to meet my goal - finishing in 1:54:57 (average pace 8:46). Since I just began marathon training (#Train2BQ) and I'm not a fan of summer racing, this was my last race until my 11th attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon (BQ) at the Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon on Saturday, September 10.

Many thanks to all the volunteers, spectators, runners and walkers! I had an amazing time and hope to elaborate more on my recap in the coming days.

Did you run, cheer or volunteer? Write a race recap?

Identical Twins Run Together To Remember

Leah & Malinda are identical twins but opposite runners.

Malinda is the "go with the flow" slower 1/2 who prefers to tweet, instagram & run marathons (4:00:57).

Leah is the "garmin obsessed" faster 1/2 who prefers to run as many races as possible while qualifying for the 2013 Boston Marathon (3:35:36).

Michael, Leah's brother-in-law, was diagnosed with cancer as a child. Michael kept fighting cancer with his inspiring Irish spirit, so it was very bittersweet when he died on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2003.

The twins' grandmother, affectionately know as GG, was diagnosed with cancer on Friday, July 13, 2012 and died on Monday, July 16, 2012. The twins are still grieving her sudden and unexpected death, but they find solace in running in her memory.

TWINS RUN 2GETHER in memory of Michael & GG, fighting childhood cancer, one race at a time!

No donation is 2 small 2 fight childhood cancer with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation!

We've submitted our applications to the MCM Contest.

Our 10th most popular post: TWINS RUN IN Dunkin'!
We don't know when the winner be announced.
All we can do now is wait with a cup of Dunkin'!
Will TWIN(s) WIN IT to be IN IT?
If you had to choose one twin, which twin should win?

TWINs RUN IN Dunkin'

"Run in the Cup!"
Special Dunkin' Donuts Contest
Marine Corps Marathon
twins run WITHOUT Dunkin'
(Before Danger! Zombies! 5K Run! in Cville)

twins run ON Dunkin'
(During the 2009 Philadelphia Marathon)
(Dunkin' cup ran PR at Run for Autism 5K in Cville)

Dunkin' Donuts, a proud sponsor of the MCM, is making available the unique opportunity for one runner to participate in "The People's Marathon" while wearing the Dunkin' cup costume. Will our enthusiasm convince DD to make available the unique opportunity for 2 TWIN RUNNERS? We could both wear the Dunkin' cup costume. Or, one twin could wear the cup and the other could wear the donut - the perfect pairing! :-)

The MCM was 1st marathon for both twins!
Malinda ran in 1995 & she ran 6 more!
Leah ran in 2007, 2008 & 2009 & 15 more!

If only one twin can win, which one?
Each twin has her own unique characteristics.
Malinda, is the "go with the flow" slow(er) 1/2.
Malinda prefers to run in costume & #TweetAndRun!
If Malinda can run 1/2 marathons as Queen of Hearts,
running in the cup would be a piece of cake (donut)! ;-)

Will @TwinsRun IN Dunkin'?
Which TWIN should be IN?

I LOVE to runDisney in costume! :-)

I love running in costume during runDisney races!

If you've never run in costume before, the runDisney 5K is the perfect opportunity for a "test run" in costume before the Half Marathon or Marathon!

I'll run as the Queen of Hearts during the Tangled 5K on Saturday, Feb 25 and I hope to see the "real" Queen of Hearts again! :-)

If you don't feel comfortable running in a full costume, why not try TEAM SPARKLE running skirts? Here is a link to some awesome costume ideas by TEAM SPARKLE! :-)
