Running Through Grief: The Process of Remembering with More Joy and Less Pain, One Step at a Time

Six years ago today, on Friday the 13th, I received the call from my mom that my grandma (affectionately know as GG by my daughter) had fallen and was in the hospital. While hospitalized, it was discovered that she had advanced lung cancer. As my family dealt with the shock, they worked tirelessly with the hospital staff to make sure her pain was under control. They began to plan to take her home on hospice but she died in the hospital on Monday, July 16, 2012.

While the intensity of the grief has lessened, the anniversary reaction seems to have hit me harder this year. Maybe it's because the dates fall on the same days of the week? Maybe it's because I'm more emotional about life in general this year? Either way, grief still hurts. I know it's OK to hurt and it's OK to cry.

I'm grateful that I had such a special relationship with my grandma. And, I'm grateful that my daughter adored her, too. My grandma made us feel loved and valued. She was present. She listened. She cared. She was kind.

I was reminded of my grandma when I recently saw "Won't You Be My Neighbor" - the documentary about Mister Rogers. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it - and make sure to bring a supply of tissues since I was crying buckets.

I'm also grateful that I started running again shortly before she died. I found great solace as I ran in her memory with Team Lemon to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. Each step helped me through my grief and together we have raised over $4,000 for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

I'm also grateful for the power of music that connected me with others and helped me through my grief. A few months before my grandma died, I met Anne through our love of The Afghan Whigs. After we bonded over music, I learned that she recently lost her husband to colon cancer and she was the mother to a young boy. She has shared some beautiful posts about love and grief on her blog: www.mamadeakspeaks.com

I'm also grateful for the wealth of grief resources on the internet. What's Your Grief is one of my favorite resources:

What's Your Grief: Dealing with the Anniversary of a Loved One's Death

I am not the only one who has found solace through running. Below are some posts I found about running and grief:

Malinda's 1st Boston Marathon: Running to Support the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

I am so very grateful for the opportunity to run my 1st Boston Marathon to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

I chose to run my 1st Boston Marathon as a charity runner with #RunDFMC because 100% of every $1 donated funds cancer research.

Asking people to donate money has never been easy for me - even though I've been running to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer since 2012.

Fundraising is more difficult for me than training for the 12 attempts it took me to qualify for the Boston Marathon - and that was extremely, extremely difficult. ;-)

Thanks again to my friends, family and anonymous donors who have already generously donated to my fundraising page.

Because your support means so very much to me, I've matched every donation to double the impact of your generosity.

As of March 15, my fundraising total is $3,940.

I will continue to match all donations until I reach to my 1st fundraising goal of $5,000.

Leah and I are grateful for the opportunity to run our 1st Boston Marathon together in memory of Leah's brother-in-law, Michael and our grandmother, who my daughter affectionately called GG.

As we run, we will be thinking of our many friends and family who have been affected by cancer.

If you have not already donated, please consider donating $5 to my fundraising page.

No donation is too small and every $1 donated will help us go the distance to conquer cancer.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Are you running the 2017 Boston Marathon?
Are you a time qualifier and/or charity runner?
Have you ever been a charity runner?
Did you have difficulty reaching your fundraising minimum?

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

One Twin Runs Philly Marathon

I'm in training to run my 5th Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, November 23. It's also my 15th marathon since 1995 and my 2nd attempt to BQ this year.

My 1st attempt to BQ was at the inaugural Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon on September 6 in Charlottesville. Six out of 12 finishers BQ'd (50% BQ Rate - WOW!) at the inaugural race directed by Leah! Alas, I was not one of them. Sigh. :-(

Unfortunately, I suffered from the heat, humidity and the worst GI issues ever during a race. I was very grateful that the race director (AKA my twin, Leah) kept the clock running (even though the time limit was 4 hours). Thanks, Leah! I barely finished last (4:23:56) but I finished. In retrospect, it might have been a better decision to drop out but I haven't been able to practice what Leah preaches. ;-)

While the Philadelphia Marathon may not be on par with other big city marathons, it's still one of my favorite marathons. I actually like the out and back portion on Kelly Drive - it's easier for me to get in the "zone" on a familiar course with less distractions.

I ran my 1st Philly Marathon with Leah in 2008 (4:16:37). It was so brutally cold that I kept all my layers on for the entire race!

I ran my 2nd Philly Marathon by myself in 2011 (4:40:59). I didn't train at all, so I was lucky to finish under 5 hours without seriously injuring myself. It's too painful to remember so I'm grateful there are no photos available. ;-)

I ran my 3rd Philly Marathon with Team Lemon in  2012 (4:00:57). This was my PR at the time and I was so grateful to be close to the magical sub-4 time!

I ran my 4th Philly Marathon with Team Lemon in 2013 (4:04:04) - otherwise know as my "May the 4s be with you" marathon. ;-) I have to admit, I was somewhat disappointed to finish slower than the year before. On a positive note, I acually enjoyed the race and finished without injuring myself so that's always a good finish! :-)

This year, I hope to raise more money to fight childhood cancer while I race towards a BQ*! (*Boston Marathon Qualifying Time of <3:45:00).

While I failed miserably at my first BQ attempt this year at the Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon, I am ready to try one more time this year.

In case you didn't know, Leah and I deemed ourselves "TWINS RUN in Our Family" so that we could share our running experiences and our support for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation on social media.

In addition to our blog, we're on TwitterInstagramPinterest and Facebook, too! Since 2012, our friends and followers have helped us raise $2,121 to help fight childhood cancer!

Can you help me reach my goal of $100?

No donation is too small to fight childhood cancer!

Text E1120912 to 85944 to donate $10 by phone!

Donate $2, $5, $10, $20 or more online:

Thanks so much for your support!

Masters Women's Half Marathon World Record Holder - Deena Kastor

What an amazing experience to run with the sweet and powerful Deena Kastor the day before she smashed the Masters Women's Half Marathon World Record! We chatted during the entire 5K but I just had to finish a second ahead of her. ;-)

Running in Memory of Meg and Alex

I've followed my "Coach" for 4 weeks.
But this morning I ran .16 instead of 16.
I will run my 16 miles tomorrow.
I will join thousands in a virtual memorial run.

Every run tells a story.
Every runner can share a story.
Tomorrow, I will run and share.

I will run in memory of Meg...
And, I will share her story...

Meg Cross Menzies, mother of 3, was tragically killed by a drunk driver while out for her morning training run on Monday, January 13. As an avid runner and Boston marathoner, she was a member of the worldwide running family. In her honor, Meg's Miles hopes to raise awareness of drunk driving, texting and driving, and overall safety of runners and cyclists everywhere.

@TwinsRun together with #MEGSMILES.
I will run in memory of Alex...
And, I will share her story...
Alex would have been 18 on January 18. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete ...with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.
@TwinsRun run together with #TeamLemon.

We're moved by two beautiful spirits who continue to inspire.
We can all make a difference, one run and one cup at a time.

2013 Gore-Tex Philadelphia Marathon & Half Marathon: 50+ Race Recaps

11/24/2014 UPDATE: 2014 Philly Marathon Race Recaps now posted!

Malinda's 2013 Philadelphia Marathon Recap
May The 4s Be With You
My 4th Philly Marathon in 4:04:40

I didn't reach my A goal (3:45) or B goal (4:00) but I reached my C goal (FINISH)! More importantly, I enjoyed the process of running this race with Team Lemon to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation - even when the last few miles were difficult.

I resonate with what Joan Benoit Samuelson has said, "every race tells a story." I wish it was easier for me to write my race stories, but I will try to gather my thoughts to write a real post about my experience.

Many thanks to all the volunteers and spectators. While I do enjoy the many miles of "solitude" along Kelly Drive, I also appreciated the shout-outs I received  along the course - even when I was being passed. ;-) I also appreciated the virtual support through my social network. I must admit that, against the advice of Mark Remy, I decided to #TweetAndRun when I realized I wasn't going to BQ or PR.

And, special thanks to @armusa for taking my photo!

Did you volunteer, cheer or run the 2013 Philadelphia Marathon, Half Marathon or Rothman 8K? Did you write a race recap or post? If so, please share your experience and/or link in the comments section and I'll add your post to my list below.

We Run DC: Inaugural Nike Women Half Marathon D.C. Race Recaps

“I am incredibly proud to be a part of the first Nike Women Half Marathon in Washington, D.C.,” said Benoit Samuelson, who joined runners in a moment of silence prior to the start of the race to honor the victims of the Boston tragedy. “Now more than ever, it’s important that we continue to unite as a running community. We all run for different reasons, but today we are 15,000 strong, running with all our hearts to celebrate women and to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.” via Nike, Inc.
