Malinda's 8th Philadelphia Marathon to Benefit American Association for Cancer Research (AACR)

As part of my 8th Philadelphia Marathon, I am supporting the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

I am running to make every step through Philadelphia a step towards cures for cancer and truly appreciate any contribution you can make.

The AACR is on the front lines of the quest for new and innovative ways to understand, prevent, and cure cancer. They bring together the greatest minds in cancer science to defeat the more than 200 types of cancer.

Of every dollar donated, 88 cents goes to support lifesaving cancer research.

Thank you!

Johnny Marr at Theatre of Living Arts (TLA) on Monday, October 22 - Malinda's iPhone Photos + Call the Comet Concert Review & Interview Links

Music has been an integral part of my marathon training for over 23 years.

I felt pure joy watching Johnny Marr play his guitar and listening to his sweet voice at Theatre of Living Arts (TLA) on Monday, October 22. 👏❤️🎸

I absolutely adore his new album “Call The Comet” 💫 and I enjoyed running to it before I was sidelined by the labral tear in my hip. 😞

Hopefully, if I give myself time to heal from the arthroscopic surgery and continue with physical therapy, I’ll be running to his music again in a few months. 🤞🎧🏃🏻‍♀️

In the meantime, I’ll listen to his music while I work on my physical therapy exercises. 😬

Heartfelt thanks to Johnny, Jack Mitchell, Iwan Gronow, and James Doviak for the much needed musical respite. Music heals.

And, what a treat to hear one of my favorite songs by The Smiths: “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby” - it became my unfortunate theme song during my 11 failed attempts to qualify for the Boston Marathon (chasing the unicorn).

Fortunately, I finally succeeded at my 12th attempt! 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🏃🏻‍♀️

P.S. Serendipitous to see Johnny Marr for the 1st time on the 23rd anniversary of my 1st marathon (Marine Corps Marathon on October 22, 1995) ✨

SO HIP IT HURTS - Large Labral Tear in Left Hip

When my hip hurts I make a "pun-ny pain" playlist - at least I still have a sense of humor. ;-)  Although, to be honest, I'd rather be adding songs to my Philly Marathon training playlist. UGH! :-(

I've had intermittent pain in my hip for a while but I was able to keep running. When the pain became more frequent, I went to see a sports medicine doctor a couple weeks before the Boston Marathon. I had an MRI which found a bunch of problems including a large labral tear in my left hip. I tried physical therapy and one cortisone injection, which seemed to help for a while.

Unfortunately, the pain has returned with a vengeance. Over the past few weeks the pain has been so intense that I'm now considering arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear. I scheduled the surgery, but I'm still debating on whether or not I'll keep the appointment. Even though I'm currently unable to run (or walk or sit) without serious pain, the reality that I'd be completely unable to run for 3-6+ months if I had surgery is overwhelming. I'm grateful that a friend, who had a successful result from the surgery, has been brutally honest about the recovery progress. Yikes.

I've also been searching online and found many helpful articles and posts that I've listed below. One of the benefits of the intranet is easy access to LOTS of information. ;-)

Are you a runner with a labral tear in your hip(s)? If so, please share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments. Thanks for your help!

And, very special thanks to Mark Remy (Dumb Runner) for making me laugh. ;-)

Philadelphia Marathon

Last year, I finished my 7th Philadelphia Marathon since 2008 and succeeded at my 12th attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon (BQ) since 2013. I am grateful that my Philly Marathon streak ended with a good time for a good cause. Fighting childhood cancer one mile at a time with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's Team Lemon.

2011 - 4:40:59

2012 - 4:00:57

2013 - 4:04:04

2014 - 3:47:42

2015 - 4:01:22

2016 - 3:46:13 (BQ & PR)

Will you run, cheer, or volunteer on Sunday?

May the miles ahead be good to all running!

Thanks to all the volunteers and spectators!

2016 Philadelphia Marathon, Half Marathon & Rothman 8K Race Recaps

Many thanks to all the staff, volunteers, spectators, runners and police officers at the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday. I was blow away - pardon the pun ;-) - by all the support!

I'm currently gathering my thoughts to share the long story of my 22nd marathon. In the meantime, here's the short story:

Since 2013, I failed 11 attempts to qualify for the Boston Marathon (BQ). On Sunday, November 20, I finally succeeded at my 12th attempt and qualified for the 2018 Boston Marathon at the 2016 Philadelphia Marathon!

I'm so very grateful for every opportunity to help fight childhood cancer one mile at a time with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's Team Lemon. Thanks to all who have donated to our fundraising pages since we started running with Team Lemon in 2012 in memory of Leah's brother-in-law, Michael, and our grandmother, GG.

I'm also very grateful for the opportunity to run the 2017 Boston Marathon with Leah as a charity runner with Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (#RunDFMC) to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

No donation is too small to help fight cancer & 100% of every dollar raised by the #RunDFMC team supports the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute,

Any donation is greatly appreciated. And, I'll match every donation until I reach my first fundraising goal of $5,000. Donate $2 (or more) here: runDFMC.org/2017/malindah/

Did you write a race recap? Share your link in the comments and we'll add to our lists.

Malinda's 12th Attempt to BQ at the 2016 Philadelphia Marathon

Leah and Malinda are identical twins and masters marathon moms.

Leah and Malinda deemed themselves "Twins Run In Our Family" so they could share their experiences running together while supporting causes they care about.

Since 2012, Leah and Malinda have raised $3,054 to support Alex's Lemonde Stand Foundation in memory of their grandmother, GG, and Leah's brother-in-law, Michael.

Leah, the faster 1/2 of @TwinsRun, has qualified for the Boston Marathon (BQ) 4 times and finished 3 Boston Marathons (2013, 2014 and 2015). Leah's application to run the 2017 Boston Marathon was just accepted on Monday, September 19!

Malinda, the slower 1/2 of @TwinsRun, has yet to BQ after 11 unsuccessful attempts:

1st attempt: 2013 Chicago Marathon (4:04:21)

2nd attempt: 2013 Philadelphia Marathon (4:04:40)

3rd attempt: 2014 Charlottesville Marathon (3:56:14)

4th attempt: 2014 Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon (4:23:56)

5th attempt: 2014 Philadelphia Marathon (3:47:42)

6th attempt: 2015 Rock 'n' Roll DC Marathon (3:54:58)

7th attempt: 2015 Charlottesville Marathon (4:19:12)

8th attempt: 2015 Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon (4:23:02)

9th attempt: 2015 Philadelphia Marathon (4:01:22)

10th attempt: 2016 Rock 'n' Roll DC Marathon (4:00:23)

11th attempt: 2016 Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon (4:00:49)

Malinda is training to succeed at her 12th attempt at the 2016 Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, November 20.

Although Malinda has yet to reach her 2017 BQ goal (3:55), you can help her reach her fundraising goal to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer!

No donation is too small - $2, $3, $4, $5 or more is greatly appreciated!

Text LEMONADE E1121983 to 85944 to donate $10 by phone.

Thanks for your support!

2014 Gore-Tex Philadelphia Marathon & Half Marathon: 70+ Race Recaps & Reports

Thanks to Donna for catching me at the finish!

Malinda (the slower 1/2 of @TwinsRun) didn't catch a BQ (3:45:00) at the Philadelphia Marathon but she did crush her PR by almost 9 minutes - finishing in 3:47:42 and placing 90th in her division (40-44)! Another personal record powered by The Afghan Whigs new record "Do To The Beast." Who said you can't improve with age? ;-)

Although Malinda missed her BQ goal, you can still help us reach our Team Lemon fundraising goal. Many thanks to 3 caring mother runners - Anne, Kelly and Kim  - for their generous donations!

One Twin Runs Philly Marathon

I'm in training to run my 5th Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, November 23. It's also my 15th marathon since 1995 and my 2nd attempt to BQ this year.

My 1st attempt to BQ was at the inaugural Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon on September 6 in Charlottesville. Six out of 12 finishers BQ'd (50% BQ Rate - WOW!) at the inaugural race directed by Leah! Alas, I was not one of them. Sigh. :-(

Unfortunately, I suffered from the heat, humidity and the worst GI issues ever during a race. I was very grateful that the race director (AKA my twin, Leah) kept the clock running (even though the time limit was 4 hours). Thanks, Leah! I barely finished last (4:23:56) but I finished. In retrospect, it might have been a better decision to drop out but I haven't been able to practice what Leah preaches. ;-)

While the Philadelphia Marathon may not be on par with other big city marathons, it's still one of my favorite marathons. I actually like the out and back portion on Kelly Drive - it's easier for me to get in the "zone" on a familiar course with less distractions.

I ran my 1st Philly Marathon with Leah in 2008 (4:16:37). It was so brutally cold that I kept all my layers on for the entire race!

I ran my 2nd Philly Marathon by myself in 2011 (4:40:59). I didn't train at all, so I was lucky to finish under 5 hours without seriously injuring myself. It's too painful to remember so I'm grateful there are no photos available. ;-)

I ran my 3rd Philly Marathon with Team Lemon in  2012 (4:00:57). This was my PR at the time and I was so grateful to be close to the magical sub-4 time!

I ran my 4th Philly Marathon with Team Lemon in 2013 (4:04:04) - otherwise know as my "May the 4s be with you" marathon. ;-) I have to admit, I was somewhat disappointed to finish slower than the year before. On a positive note, I acually enjoyed the race and finished without injuring myself so that's always a good finish! :-)

This year, I hope to raise more money to fight childhood cancer while I race towards a BQ*! (*Boston Marathon Qualifying Time of <3:45:00).

While I failed miserably at my first BQ attempt this year at the Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon, I am ready to try one more time this year.

In case you didn't know, Leah and I deemed ourselves "TWINS RUN in Our Family" so that we could share our running experiences and our support for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation on social media.

In addition to our blog, we're on TwitterInstagramPinterest and Facebook, too! Since 2012, our friends and followers have helped us raise $2,121 to help fight childhood cancer!

Can you help me reach my goal of $100?
