Digestive Health Alliance Advocacy Day

On June 19, I joined Advocates from the Digestive Health Alliance (DHA) and International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD) on Capitol Hill. We met with congressional and senatorial staff to ask for their support of the Functional Gastrointestinal & Motility Disorders Research Enhancement Act of 2013 (H.R. 842)

You can also help by emailing your member of the U.S. House of Representatives in support of the Functional Gastrointestinal & Motility Disorders Research Enhancement Act of 2013 (H.R. 842). When you reach out as a constituent, you put a face on those affected by functional GI and motility disorders; you add meaning to what could be just another piece of legislation coming across a desk.

Thank you for your support!

Running with Grief: Identical Twins Run Together to Remember

It's been almost one year since our grandma "GG" died suddenly from cancer on July 16, 2012. I'm grateful that I continued to run through my grief. I'm also grateful I could run with Team Lemon to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

I'm in the process of writing a post on the subject of running through grief. If running has helped you cope with grief and you are willing to share your story, please comment below. All comments must be approved before they are published, so if you'd prefer to keep your comment private, just let me know and it won't be published.

Grief is not the process of forgetting.
Grief is the process of remembering,
with less pain and more joy.

One step at a time...

Alex's Original Lemonade Stand

Alex's "Original" Lemonade Stand was held on Saturday, June 8 at Penn Wynne Elementary School. Over $116, 000 was raised to fight childhood cancer. Thanks to all who made contributions to make a difference for children with cancer. And, thank you Alex for inspiring so many!
I was so grateful to be there to participate in the Butterfly Release. I released my butterfly in memory of Alex and all children who have died too soon.

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment
Its glory and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed
We feel lucky to have seen it

Twins Run with Team Lemon

Leah & Malinda are identical twins but opposite runners. Malinda is the "go with the flow" slower 1/2 who prefers to tweet, instagram & run marathons (4:00:57). Leah is the BQ (3:35:36) x 2 "Garmin obsessed" faster 1/2 who prefers to run as many races as possible. :-)

Michael, Leah's brother-in-law, was diagnosed with leukemia as a child. Michael kept fighting cancer with his inspiring Irish spirit, so it was very bittersweet when he died on St. Patrick's Day, 2003.

The twins' grandmother, affectionately know as GG, was diagnosed with cancer on Friday, July 13, 2012 and died on Monday, July 16, 2012.

In memory of Michael & GG, TWINS RUN together with Team Lemon to fight childhood cancer! Follow @TwinsRun as we prepare to run our 2nd Chicago Marathon together on October 13, 2013.

No donation is too small to fight childhood cancer. Can you donate $2

Or, join our "Mother Runners & Others" Team and help Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation reach 1 million miles this September!

The Afghan Whigs & Our Congregation to Conquer Cancer

It has been one year since I first met two inspiring mother runners fighting cancer. Thanks to our love for The Afghan Whigs and running, our friendship has grown and our Congregation to Conquer Cancer continues. We ran the Nike Women's Half Marathon DC together and we're all training for marathons while raising money to fight cancer. This year, Anne will run the New York City Marathon with DetermiNation to support the American Cancer Society. Malinda will run the Chicago Marathon with Team Lemon to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer

2013 Blue Cross Broad Street Run Ten Miler: Red Socks Running

From Philly to Boston with Love
Before the runners arrive
Since I PR'd at 2012 Broad Street Run (1:29), I decided that I didn't want to run this year. After my 10 mile run on Saturday, I was ready to cheer runners on Sunday! Almost 3 weeks after the Boston Marathon, it was inspiring to see red socks running!

I was very grateful for the opportunity to spectate. In case you missed it, "Standing Ovation" by Mark Remy was a powerful tribute to spectators. Mark was able to capture all of my emotions related to the Boston Marathon tragedy.

And, thanks to Team Philly and Philadelphia Runner for a great tailgate!
