Racing to the 2013 Boston Marathon

So I've been reviewing my races so far this year and trying not have a panic attack about how I might perform at the Boston Marathon.

I've been much slower and that's concerning.

Here's a breakdown (2013 vs 2012):

New Year's Day 5K

23:10 vs 23:09

(OK, this one was close.)

Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge (1/2 Marathon on Saturday & Marathon on Sunday)

(5:50:05) 1:48:17 & 4:01:49 vs (5:46:29) 1:50:22 & 3:56:07

(It was HOT this year so that probably didn't help. And, I probably ran the half too fast. Oh well!)

Princess Half Marathon

1:44:09 vs 1:40:05

(Once again, it was MUCH hotter this year than last year, so that could be part of it. The good news, Malinda and I finished 1st in sister / sister team category!)

Martha Jefferson 8K

37:58 vs 37:08

(Can't really explain this away with weather because it was nice and cool. At least I came in 2nd in AG, was 4th last year. And there was no one near me at the end. Last year I was passed by two women within feet of the finish line, ouch!)

Ten Miler (2013 Charlottesville / 2012 Cherry Blossom)

1:18:14 vs 1:12:26

(The Cville course is notoriously hilly instead of flat like Cherry Blossom so I can't really compare those two races, can I? I just wanted to run my 3rd fastest 10-mile race and I did that by nearly a minute. And, at least I came in 3rd in my AG!)

So what's my problem?!?

Last year was AMAZING and I can't really hope to have success like that consistently.

I just wonder if I should continue to panic or CHILL OUT... if there's a reason for this that I can fix or if it's just a phase?

Is it because I weigh a little more than I did last year at this time (could 5-7 lbs, could that make that a huge difference?!?) or have I been holding myself back in these races because I know the big prize - BOSTON - is just mere months or weeks away?

I definitely knew that I wasn't trying for a PR in any of these races, because it was a race for "fun" and training or because of the forecast or because within the first mile when I just wasn't feeling it. So instead, when appropriate, I did my best to run as close to my ideal marathon pace (7:55 - 8:00) and run comfortably hard rather than push it and constantly check my watch.

Some people might say I race too much, but I've actually raced LESS so far this year.

In the 5 weeks between my Princess Half Marathon PR and Cherry Blossom 10 Miler PR last year, I also ran a 4 miler, 8K, 1 mile, and 5K in between. And I PRd in those distances, too!

This year, I had 3 weeks between the Princess Half Marathon and the Charlottesville10 Miler and I only raced the Martha Jefferson 8K in between.

Oh well, at least I'm having fun while I'm running.
.
All the anxiety doesn't set in until I'm resting. :)

Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge Character Photos - 2013 runDisney Walt Disney World Half Marathon and Marthon

Do you runDisney for the photo opportunities? I do! I stopped for all the character photos during the Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge. Although I completed 17 runDisney races since 2009, this was my first #RunCharacterTweetRepeat with my iPhone. I waited in lines for a long time during the Walt Disney World Half Marathon, but the pictures were worth the wait. Luckily, the lines were shorter during the Walt Disney World Marathon, so I finished with a decent time (4:34:01). Thanks MarathonFoto!

Going Goofy with Runner's World Challenge

When my identical twin sister signed us up for the Runner's World Challenge at Walt Disney World Marathon weekend, I wasn't sure what to expect. Walt Disney World is already is my fave destination race location, so I wasn't sure how it could get any better. Oh, how naive I was! The Runner's World Challenge hosted what, to me, was an ideal "runner's fantasy camp" ... but it was REAL! An amazing combination of running legends,  hilariously entertaining and knowledgeable Runner's World staff, and new friends I hope to see again at future races and Runner's World Challenges.

From a no-wait, amazingly easy one-stop-only packet pickup, to the VIP lounge at the Yacht Club Resort where you could randomly bump into a running idol or grab a diet coke, to an informative pre-race panel with last minute advice, to a private bus to the race retreat, to being escorting to the starting line by coach and Runner's World CRO (Chief Running Officer) Bart Yasso and seeing him again immediately after crossing the finish line ... I couldn't ask for a better experience!

When we came to pick-up our Runner's World Challenge packets we got a VIP badge and let me tell you, I felt like a VIP all weekend! I almost don't want to let the secret out about how incredible a job the Runner's World Challenge staff does for it's challenge participants, because I don't want to have to compete for limited slots in the future. This experience was worth every penny!

My initial goal for Goofy's Race and a Half challenge was to beat my times from last year (Half Marathon: 1:50 / Marathon: 3:56) but I ended up running the half 2 minutes faster and full 5 minutes slower (Half Marathon: 1:48  / Marathon: 4:01). Not too bad considering it was much warmer this year! The best part is that I enjoyed the running and stopped at almost all the character stops as long as they had an official MarathonFoto photographer. I decided not to bring my iPhone because I didn't want to bother carrying it or worry that it would get wet or broken. Luckily, I still managed to get over 20 character photos from the 2 races with photos still being identified.

The best part of the half marathon was that I managed to run my PR marathon pace consistently without having to constantly look at my watch and it felt comfortable. I had wanted to run the last 5 miles at 7:50 pace as a workout, but adjusted that goal when the temps and sun started to rise.

My revised goal for the marathon was to run the first 15 miles at 8:53-8:59 pace and then run by feel for the rest of the "race". Luckily, I met that goal. I had some anxiety that I was going to crash and burn (or melt!) around mile 16. I started having an internal pep talk with myself bargaining that if I just could make it to 18-20 then all bets were off and I could take walking breaks as needed. I knew it was doubtful that I would break 4 hours, so I stopped looking at my Garmin and took in the sites, spectators, and other runners.

The new portions of the course helped lift my spirits and I felt like I caught my second wind around mile 19. I started passing some walkers and those who were starting to fade and that energized me even more. I finished the marathon feeling more in control than I have in quite some time and even though my pace was much slower than what I wanted to run, I felt grateful I ended the race relatively pain free and with a smile on my face.

Thank you to all the staff from the Runner's World Challenge! I hope to see you again soon at another Runner's World Challenge!
It's the one and only Mark Remy sandwiched between the twins! ;-)

My 3G Network: Grief, Gastroparesis & Goofy Challenge

Today, January 7, is GG's birthday. On January 13, when @TwinsRun the 2nd half of Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge, it will be 6 months since I received the phone call. On Friday, July 13, our mom called to tell me that our grandma, GG, had fallen and was very ill. GG was diagnosed with cancer and died on Monday, July 16. The grief over the past 6 months has been intense. My only solace has been running (#Irun4GG). I'm grateful that Leah and I will run Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge together to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer in her memory. She was so proud of us for supporting such a worthy cause.

I grieve for myself, my family and especially for my mom. I wish I could give more support to my mom, because she lost her mom and best friend. I can only imagine how difficult it has been for her since I can't imagine my life without my mom.

It's been especially difficult for me lately, since I still struggle with gastroparesis. Sometimes, the physical pain is easier to cope with than the emotional pain. Even with the pain, I'm grateful for the support I received from GG and the support I continue to receive from my mom. Because of their support, it's important for me to keep going and to keep giving back to others.
