The Afghan Whigs at Ottobar: Malinda Ann Hill Meets Greg Dulli on Her 43rd Birthday

This happened. On my 43rd birthday. Greg Dulli smiled at me while I was talking to him!

I don't usually celebrate my birthday - or rather our birthday since I'm an identical twin.

And, I've never done anything special on New Year's Eve.

Luckily, thanks to Melissa, Anne and the rest of The Congregation, I celebrated New Year's Eve in 2012 and my birthday tonight.

It has been an incredible journey (music, running, races and concerts) since Melissa, Anne and I first met at The Afghan Whigs reunion concert at The Bowery Ballroom on May 23, 2012.

I am grateful for social media for connecting me with Melissa and Anne as well as re-connecting me with The Congregation (FYI - The Congregation is a group of individuals who love The Afghan Whigs and all things related to Greg Dulli). Eons ago (otherwise know as the 90s), I was on The Congregation email listserv when I had AOL dial-up. Ouch! I am old. Today, The Congregation is on Facebook which makes it easier for us to connect with each other in spite of the evils of the platform.

While I have been known to live tweet or Instagram a concert or a race, tonight was not the time or place. I refrained from all iPhone use except for one photo with Melissa and Anne before the show and a photo with Greg after the show.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the audience respected the band's request. Greg politely asked one guy not to use a flash and that was it from my perspective. Of course, I was fortunate to be directly in front of the stage so it was easy to be fully present in the moment.

During most of the shows I attended in 2012, I took at least a few photos or videos to share since amateur photography was encouraged. Tonight, I was grateful for the no photo policy so I had no temptation to take photos. I enjoyed being fully present at this show with no distractions from digital devices.

Similarly, I used to love to tweet and run. Tweeting while running was a way for me to connect with other runners. It served its purpose at the time but now I prefer to tweet before and after my run so I can focus on running in the moment and feeling the music while I run.

While I find the most meaning in music and running while I'm alone, I still race and go to concerts for the camaraderie. For me, concerts and races are all about the stories and the connections.

I do hope to write more about my moments and stories. But, it's easier for me to write in 140 characters or less.

In the meantime, please read this post by MamaDeak: Brooklyn, Boston, Baltimore - Maybe I Should be a Roadie. I am always inspired by Anne and her willingness to share her thoughts.

Thanks again to Greg Dulli, John Curley, Melissa, Anne and The Congregation for a night filled with music, joy, laughter, inspiration and gratitude.

2014 Blue Cross Broad Street Run 10 Miler - Malinda's 5th Personal Record in 30 Days

Wow! I seriously surprised myself on Sunday. Thanks to The Afghan Whigs for their new record, Do to the Beast, which powered me to 5 personal records in 30 days!

And thanks to the twin powers from the flat Leah that I was carrying in my pocket! ;-)

Leah's Chicago Marathon Recap

Chicago Marathon

PAULA!!!!!! Brrrr. Epic Garmin Fail. Ouch. PR. OUCH!!!

Wow. I'm in pain! I do not like that, but luckily I have something else to think about. I'm not sure what was more exciting this weekend - meeting Paula Radcliffe and getting my photo with her (actually TWO pictures, thanks Malinda!) or setting a new marathon PR while qualifying for the 2014 Boston Marathon. Ok, I do know ... it was meeting PAULA! Paula, my idol, my hero, my inspiration! I can't say how much I loved reading her autobiography and learning more about her struggles. I was giddy when she replied to one of my tweets on Friday and was shaking for nearly an hour after meeting her in person on Saturday. I can't believe how amazingly lucky I was to have that experience. HURRAY!!!!

(Here I am telling Paula how happy I was to get a reply to my tweet to her!)

So let me get to the race report!

I started off the marathon at 8:30 pace for at least 1/2 a mile and I was proud of myself for starting out on my target pace (Paula had said on Saturday to trust your training, pace yourself and focus on your goal!). However, when we went into a tunnel and weird things started happening with my Garmin. One minute I'm going 9:30 minute pace, the next 7:45, I had no clue what to think! I reset it hoping that would help give a more accurate pace, but then it was saying I was going 10 minute mile. WTH? I ended up resetting it a total of 4 times and after the last one I just switched to the clock because I didn't trust it anymore. I never looked at my garmin again for the rest of the race!

Luckily I caught up with one of two 3:35 pace groups (I started in Corral C, but I'm pretty sure the group I ran with started in Corral B). I hoped that I could stick with them until mile 20. I started fading around mile 17 and somewhere between miles 18-19 they were out of sight (ahead of me!). I thought, oh well, I still can BQ (3:45:00) even if I can't run under 3:40.

I knew when I got to the 20 mile point that if the clock said 2:45, I would be ok. Since I started around 3 minutes after the gun went off, I knew I could run 10 minute miles and still reach goal.

When I had 4 miles to go I started to get painfully uncomfortable (damn you piriformis!!) and figured if I wasn't going to PR, I didn't have to kill myself by pushing harder through the pain. Although, to be honest, I think the only way I would have gone any faster is if I had someone like Kristen Keller running with me and encouraging me like she did the final mile at the Turkey Trot last year (thanks again for that, btw!)

When the finish line was within site I was searching for the clock but couldn't see it clearly until I was less than 200M away. When I saw it was still under 3:40 I think in dug a little deeper and picked up the pace a notch to make sure I made it. That was the first time I finished a marathon and had no clue what my unofficial time was! I tried to check my phone, but as soon as I entered my password i got the low battery signal and it turned off. Doh!

The walk through the finish line area to the Balboa tent was almost as painful as last year. Shifting from running to walking made all the pain intensify and all I wanted was my phone charger, a cold beer, and a massage (in that order!). I think it took me nearly ten minutes to get to that beer and massage. At least I met a very nice guy who chatted and shuffled with me to the tent (and I BEAT him!).

The post-race massage was my longest and best one ever! The perk to getting a ticket to the Balboa tent and finishing in a reasonable time was NO wait! I even had two therapists work on me simultaneously. What a luxury! It was painful, but also relaxing and they forced my legs to engage in some post-race stretching.

During the massage I started to shiver and regretted that I didn't pack an extra long sleeve fleece top in my bag. Despite the chills I grabbed another cold beer (mmmm!) and on my way to find a seat, I found a vent blowing out heat. Heaven! I sat on the floor in front of it and changed my socks and shoes, noticing that I had a new black toenail on the toe next to my little toe on my right foot. Wow for a little nail that can cause a lot of pain! I've never had a problem with that toe before so that was kind of strange.

When the heat mysteriously stopped I decided to walk over to meet my friend Amy and the kids who were getting bored. To my huge surprise I saw my twin Malinda walking towards me! Either I was in that massage for longer than I thought or she was smoking fast on the course! And she was! She even beat my time from last year AND ran a negative split (something I've only done once in 19 marathons!). WAY TO GO MALINDA! So proud of you!

So I didn't hit my A goal (3:34:59), but I did achieve goal B (PR/-5BQ for 2014). I'm a little bummed that I didn't run a negative split, but considering I could only judge my pace when I passed a mile marker clock, it could have been a lot worse! My 2nd 5K was my fastest and I am certain that's why I started fading the last 3-4 miles. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I had no business running nearly 3 sub-8:00 miles in a marathon. DUH!

A few random thoughts....

The temperature difference between last year and this year coudn't have been more stark. Last year I started the race in a bra top. This year, I was covered in a lot of layers. I left my extra shirt and jacket on for almost three miles. I ditched the gloves around the 10k pt and the arm warmers and fuzzy headband a couple miles later.

Pet Peeve: I really wish they would alternate flavors of Gatorade at the various stops. I never want another cup of lemon-lime! I would have paid extra for some fruit punch and a variety of other flavors.

I'm so grateful to my long-time friend Amy for taking my kids to the race and getting this cool picture of me in Chinatown. I look unhappy, and at that point, I think I was ready to be at the finish line!

I loved having my name on my shirt. I almost felt like I was still in Charlottesville because I heard my name so much! :)

This marathon didn't feel as easy and pain free as my previous PR at Charlottesville. After that marathon I actually walked home 2 miles after the race and felt fine! After the race yesterday, I was struggling to walk without wincing and could barely keep up with my sister! And I'm still pretty sore today.

So here are my stats!!

Leah's Chicago Marathon Goals

"I had goals. They were evil goals, but they were goals."
Dr. Doofenshmirtz

A Goal: 3:34:59 or faster (BQ-10 2014)
B Goal: 3:38:03 or faster (PR)
C Goal: 3:39:59 or faster (BQ-5 2014)
D Goal: 3:44:59 or faster (BQ 2014)
E Goal: 3:59.59 or faster (breaking 4 hours for the 5th time)
F Goal: 4:07:44 or faster (course PR)
G Goal: Dropping out if I'm in as much Piriformis pain as I was from mile 10 - finish in 2011

Goal A should be realistic based on my marathon PR (3:38:04) and my past race performances.*

BUT.... you never know what will happen on race day!

So I'm trying to think about other scenarios. I believe I'll be satisfied as long as I get a BQ for 2014! :) And if I can't do that, I can try again at Three Bridges and/or Disney!

FYI: If I run the first half of Chicago any faster than 1:48:00, I will be asking for trouble!

I'd like to stay between 1:48-1:52 for the first half. And run 1:46-1:51 for the 2nd half.

Will 2nd 1/2 of 2012 be Faster 1/2 for Faster 1/2 of TWINS RUN?

A look back at 2012 so far ... will the 2nd Half of 2012 be the Faster Half for the Faster Half of TWINS RUN)
By
Leah Connor

Wow, 2012 is more than 1/2 over, but what a year it's been! I've PR'd in 5 distances this year - the mile, 5K, 10 miles, half-marathon, and marathon. The marathon PR of 3:38:04 means the most to me because my 2nd fastest time was more than 4 years ago (March 2008 - 3:54:47).

You'd think I'd be ready for a break, but I still haven't met all my goals for 2012. I'm eager to try for a PR in the 10K (Pepsi 10K) and 4 miles (Women's Four Miler). I'd also like to improve my mile and 2-mile times, though I'm not sure I'll have the opportunity. Below is a collage of some of my favorite racing photos this year as well as best times and goals.

5th Annual Princess Half Marathon with runDisney Perfect Princess

Are you a runDisney "Perfect Princess"?
by Leah Connor

Disney's Princess Half Marathon is one of just two "streak" races that I've run consecutively since the inaugural event (the other being the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in Fredericksburg, VA where I earned my place in the "Iron Mile Company" this year).

More importantly, it might be the only race where I've significantly improved my time every year that I've competed - 1:55 in 2009, 1:54 in 2010, 1:43 in 2011 and 1:40 in 2012.

I'm hoping to continue the streak on February 24, 2013, when I run my 5th Princess Half Marathon to become a "Perfect Princess." My goal is to finish 1:39:59 or faster.

I just might have to skip the character stops along the course to hit this PR, which would be a first for me. Each year I've stopped no less than 5 times to pose with my favorite princesses. The one benefit to running fast - there are hardly any lines for the photo opps!

Waynesboro Summer Extravaganza 10K: Time for Plan B

July 7, 2012 - Waynesboro Summer Extravaganza 10K .... Time for Plan B
by Leah Connor

Sometimes having a good race doesn't necessarily involve earning a new PR or running a fast pace. That was the case on Saturday July 7th at the Waynesboro Summer Extravaganza 10K.

Having just raced the Independence Day 5K three days earlier, and suffering through the brutal heat wave for nearly a week, I knew I wasn't going to even try to PR (currently 45:11) or improve on my time from last year (47:49). My heat-adjusted, Plan B goal was to maintain an 8:00 pace. However, when I eyed the competition at the starting line I added the goal of placing in the top 3 of my age group (I had placed 2nd last year).

I started off towards the front of the group. I knew that I couldn't go out too fast or I would pay dearly in the last couple miles when the sun would be even stronger. I was thrilled when I reached the first water stop. I didn't drink anything, but instead dumped two cups on my head. What a relief! I poured even more water over my head at the other two water stops along the course and know it's what kept me running strong.

When we reached the point of the turn-around at mile three I started to count the women ahead of me. One... two... three... That was it! I was in 4th place!

I realized there was no way I was going to catch any of those women so my goal was to just maintain a comfortable pace for as long as possible (hopefully until the finish line). I felt even more confident when I saw the next closest woman was nearly a minute behind me. Even if all the women ahead of me were in my age group, I would still easily place 3rd, unless I hit the wall and had to walk. I was determined not to let that happen.

During the 2nd water stop around mile 4, I decided to make a small surge and pass the two guys I'd been closely following the entire race. I love it when I pass anyone during a race, but I especially enjoy it when it's a guy ! :) Not only did I pass at least 4 people during the race, more importantly, I didn't get passed by anyone after mile 2. I felt like I was making good race day decisions and it was paying off!

It took awhile for the race results to be posted, but when I saw I was 1st in my age group, 4th female, and 19th overall out of 75 participants I felt awesome!

The course had a lot of rolling hills, but after mile 1 (which I probably did run too quickly now that I think about it), my next 5 miles were pretty consistently paced, varying by 4-17 secs per mile.

Mile 1 = 7:41
Mile 2 = 8:05
Mile 3 = 7:53
Mile 4 = 7:57
Mile 5 = 8:09
Mile 6 = 8:10
Mile .25 = 7:45 pace
And here are my obssessive .5 mile splits ...

So my "recovery week" in marathon training was during a heat wave and included a 5K, a 10K, and total road mileage of 39. I sure hope it cools down by Saturday when I have to run a 17-mile long run!

2012 Blue Cross Broad Street Run Ten Miler - My Reflections & 35+ Race Recaps

If you aren't a Seinfeld fan, you probably won't understand this meme. In this episode of Seinfeld, a marathoner retells the story of how he slept through the Olympics. It wasn't the snooze button but separate knobs for the alarm and radio volume.

At 5:30am. I expected my babysitter to arrive. As the minutes passed without her knocking on the door, I began to panic. I tried repeatedly to reach her by phone, text & email to no avail.

At 6am, I gave up and called a friend for help. She graciously offered to drive me to 30th Street Station and take care of my daughter during the race. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for my friend's help.

At 7am, while I was on my way to the start of the race, my babysitter finally called. It wasn't a knob, but her iPhone alarm didn't go off. She was so apologetic and I immediately forgave her.

Leah and I deemed ourselves "TWINS RUN in our family" to share our experiences running together to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer in memory of Leah's brother-in-law Michael who died from relapsed leukemia on March 17, 2003.

Michael and Laoghaire (2002)

Leah couldn't run with me as we planned, but she did receive a $150 donation to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation on May 6 because we're running the 2012 Chicago Marathon together with Team Lemon

Since Leah couldn't pace me, she gave me this mantra: "Each Mile's A Gift, Negative Split" I also kept in mind this quote from Joan Benoit Samuelson,"Run Your Own Race!"

Photos carried in running belt for inspiration

Waiting for the Broad Street Line in Team Sparkle

On Broad Street Line waiting for babysitter to call

I was in the Green "with envy we aren't in purple" Corral. I was lucky to see some familiar faces while I waited in the Green Corral. I talked with several co-workers before the start, which helped calm my nerves.

I was surprised when I heard someone say, "Malinda." I looked up to see it was "Coach Kristie" who recognized me from my shirt! Connecting with Kristie helped get me in the zone for a personal record (PR)!

I was ready to run in my yellow Team Sparkle skirt and my Brooks Addiction running shoes.

I finished my first Broad Street Run in 1999 when there was a "record" field of 7,300. Running with 40,000 was quite a different experience. There were so many enthusiastic spectators - I even "low five-d" Governor Ed Rendell after City Hall!

Jay Scott, Alex's dad, was running in his lemon costume for Team Lemon, Jay was running super fast. I tried to keep up with him so I could say "Hi" but I couldn't catch up! You can see Jay (AKA "The Running Lemon") running ahead of me in the photo below.

A glimpse of the Running Lemon far ahead of me

It was so crowded during the race and I couldn't get in the zone. I decided to listen to music, even though I like to run in silence. I needed some inspiration, so I turned my MP3 player to random play. I prefer a random shuffle to a playlist and each song that came on was so appropriate! My Curse, Fountain & Fairfax, Gentleman by The Afghan Whigs were the first songs I heard. I've loved these songs since I listened to them repeatedly when I trained for my 1st marathon - the 1995 Marine Corps Marathon. Of course, I listened to these songs on a cassette Walkman back in the 90's. WOW, I'm old. Am I the only one who tried to untangle mangled cassette tapes while running?

I was at the last mile when I heard "I'll Be Fine" by Emmet Swimming. This was always one of my favorite songs but now it's bittersweet.

Emmet Swimming - Wake

This song reminds me of a girl I met when we were both seriously ill. I shared this song with her and she liked it a lot. Several months later, I learned that she died suddenly. Whenever I hear this song when I run, I start to cry because I think of her. This happened with such intensity during the race, I couldn't breathe. This experience reminded me of Dick Beardsley's experience at 1982 Boston Marathon. I was fortunate to hear him speak at Philadelphia Runner on May 3.

As I ran I thought...
- Her life was too short...
- I've come close to death but survived...
- I'm grateful to be alive...
- I'm grateful to be able to run...
So I kept running... And I finished!

Surprise waiting for me from my daughter

As I reflect on my experiences, I realize I was:

- Understanding & offered forgiveness
- Appreciative & offered gratitude
- Joyful & shared humor
- Ran my own race & set a personal record!
